Balthasar, the youngest of the bunch, came from Europe, the dark Caspar from Africa, and the old, gray Melchior from Asia. They didn't come to Bethlehem empty-handed. Gold symbolizes kings, frankincense refers to his divine origins, and myrrh indicated that he would suffer in life. Indeed, with "ij": a nice gift for a birth? So much for the history lesson.
