Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar: each king or wise man represented a continent. Balthasar, the youngest of the group, came from Europe, the dark-skinned Caspar from Africa, and the old, grey-haired Melchior came from Asia. They did not arrive in Bethlehem empty-handed. They brought gold, myrrh, and frankincense for the little child in his straw-filled crib. Gold symbolizes kingship, frankincense refers to his divine origin, and myrrh indicated that he would suffer in his life. Indeed, quite a gift at your birth, wouldn't you say? So much for the history lesson..
