My favorite mug, now also in purple

At our house, we fight over these lovely 4-deciliter mugs. Personally, I find them the nicest and best of all the different cups. If you are a fan of purple and the Unikko pattern, this is your moment, because Marimekko hasn't used purple shades very often in recent years. This version of the iconic Unikko flower in purple and pink goes very well with the temporary collection of the pink-dotted Siirtolapuutarha pattern.

Unikko: the flower that actually shouldn't have existed

In 1964, there was one clear rule at Marimekko: no flowers. Founder Armi Ratia thought floral prints were dowdy and old-fashioned, and that was that. Or so she thought. Designer Maija Isola didn't agree. She grabbed a large brush, secretly painted an entire series of flowers, and didn't follow any rules: very big, very cheerful, and completely different. When she showed her designs, Armi immediately fell for those enormous poppies (Unikko is Finnish for poppy). The rule was tossed overboard and the print went straight into production. Thus, a small act of rebellion became the face of Marimekko and, eventually, a global icon of Finnish design: modern, spirited, and above all, very optimistic. You encounter the poppy everywhere in Finland, and far beyond that, the Unikko has been brightening up everything it lands on for over sixty years. And now your table, too!
