Reference to the masterpieces of Royal Delft

I already think this one with those witty birds on it is absolutely amazing. But I especially love the idea behind this series. Royal Delft has a huge collection of iconic designs in its archive. Many of those designs are still hand-painted by their masters on their beautiful items today. Many of those items are true works of art. They are beautiful to look at and probably a nice investment object if you know what I mean; in any case, it makes them inaccessible to the general public.

The Blue Master mug collection now simply brings these iconic designs to your breakfast table! By transferring details from—in this case, the plate with flowers and bird—onto perhaps the most used item in your kitchen cupboard... the mug!

Transferware

I wrote about "transferring" above, and that is exactly the crux behind these mugs. The plates, lidded jars, and vases that the Blue Master mugs refer to are all hand-painted. The mugs are 'transferware'. This means that the images are applied to the porcelain like a kind of sticker. It is then glazed and fired at a very high temperature. This makes your mug completely suitable for daily use. It is dishwasher and microwave safe. So you can use it to the fullest!

Look, I want them for myself, but these mugs are of course also a super fun gift. For a housewarming, for someone moving abroad, for your aunt in Sweden who sometimes misses the Netherlands, for a Delft student graduating, or for fans of Delft Blue.
