The classic Unikko

There's even a beautiful story attached to this classic Unikko design. Armi Ratia, the founder of Marimekko, had forbidden the designers of the new Finnish brand to create floral motifs, or rather, she had announced she would never print fabrics with floral motifs. She was convinced that the beauty of flowers couldn't be captured in a 2D print. Designer Maija Isola was quite civilly disobedient and created an entire series featuring this stylized poppy: Unikko. And the rest is history! The Unikko is now 60 years old.
