The classic Unikko

There is even a great story behind this classic Unikko design. Armi Ratia, the founder of Marimekko, had forbidden the designers of the new Finnish brand to come up with floral prints—or rather, she had announced that she would never print fabrics with a floral motif. She was convinced that the beauty of flowers could not be captured in a 2D print. Designer Maija Isola was happily disobedient and created an entire series with this stylized poppy: Unikko. And the rest is history! The Unikko is now 60 years old.
