Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar: each king or wise man represented a continent. Balthasar, the youngest of the bunch, came from Europe, the dark Caspar from Africa, and the old, gray Melchior from Asia. They didn't come to Bethlehem empty-handed. They brought gold, myrrh, and frankincense for the baby in his manger, filled with straw. Gold symbolizes kings, frankincense refers to his divine origins, and myrrh indicated that he would suffer in life. Indeed, with "ij": a nice gift for a birth? So much for the history lesson.
