Did you know, by the way, that this ultimate Marimekko design, the Unikko, almost didn't exist? In the 1960s, Armi Ratia, the founder of Marimekko, believed the intense beauty of flowers couldn't be captured in a two-dimensional design. She had announced she would never print fabrics with floral motifs. Designer Maija Isola was quite headstrong and, against her boss's wishes, designed a floral pattern anyway: Unikko!
