The story behind the Unikko

There's even a beautiful story attached to this Unikko design. Armi Ratia, the founder of Marimekko, had forbidden the designers of the new Finnish brand to create floral motifs, or rather, she had announced she would never print fabrics with them. Designer Maija Isola was quite civilly disobedient and created an entire series featuring this stylized poppy: Unikko. And the rest is history!

Linen and cotton

Linen blended with cotton for better absorbency due to its hollow fibers. Moreover, linen is produced in Europe and uses significantly less water than cotton. Another small step for Marimekko in their journey toward more sustainable production.
